Human Rights Day and the Global Hope 365 Mission for Gender Equality

December 10, 2019

Human Rights Day is observed on December 10th throughout the world. The Day celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which serves as a blueprint for human rights for everyone across the globe. The UDHR defines the standards for human rights and is the foundation for all additional United Nations policies, documents, and programs on human rights. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) build on those human rights standards and call for public and private sector participation in achieving the SDGs. Sustainable development Goal 5 on Gender Equality includes Target 5.2 “Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation” and Target 5.3 “Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.”

Human Rights Day is a big day at Global Hope 365 because human rights are what we are passionate about. It is why we do what we do! As a nonprofit dedicated to ending Child Marriage and Human Trafficking, we find strength and inspiration in the belief that all girls deserve equality and the opportunity to live independent lives free from violence. The sex trade and myth of ownership of women are cultural practices that persist in our modern society. Both of these practices allow for Child Marriage and Human Trafficking to exist in the United States today in the year 2019.

The 2019 theme for Human Rights Day is “Youth Standing Up for Human Rights.” This theme is so incredibly important and connected to the mission of Global Hope 365 because youth are affected by the laws and policies that allow Child Marriage and Human Trafficking to persist. The United Nations gives us inspiration and hope for the involvement of youth in standing up for human rights. The United Nations said regarding the 2019 theme, “Empowering youth to better know and claim their rights will generate benefits globally.” We agree. Global Hope 365 has observed incredible girls and young women who have been victims of Child Marriage and Human Trafficking become advocates for awareness as well as advocates for policies that will change the future for other girls. Victim advocates have a powerful story to tell.
